Mummy MOT

A specialist post-natal assessment from six weeks postpartum, covering core strength, abdominal separation, and pelvic floor health - with a personalised recovery plan to help you return to activity safely.

A Mummy MOT is a comprehensive postnatal physiotherapy assessment designed to give you a clear picture of how your body is recovering after childbirth. From six weeks postpartum onwards, it looks at the areas most likely to be affected by pregnancy and birth - your posture, breathing, core, and pelvic floor - and gives you a personalised plan for getting back to the activities that matter to you.

During the appointment, Sioned carries out a detailed check of your abdominal muscles to assess for diastasis recti (separation of the stomach muscles), and - with your consent - a gentle internal pelvic floor assessment to evaluate strength, tone, coordination, and any signs of prolapse. If you would prefer not to have an internal examination, real-time ultrasound imaging is available in clinic, giving you clear visual feedback on how your muscles are functioning.

The session ends with a bespoke recovery plan: targeted exercises, practical advice on daily activities like lifting and carrying, and a clear pathway to returning to exercise safely - without leaks, discomfort, or pain.

Who this is for

A Mummy MOT is for any woman who has given birth - whether recently or years ago. You do not need a referral, and you do not need to be experiencing obvious symptoms to benefit. Many women attend simply to understand how their body has changed and to recover with confidence.

It is particularly relevant if you are experiencing any of the following after having a baby: leaking when you cough, sneeze, or exercise; a feeling of heaviness or pressure in your pelvis; tummy muscles that don't feel right; back or pelvic girdle pain; or uncertainty about when and how to return to exercise.

It is never too late. Whether you are six weeks, six months, or six years postpartum, a pelvic health assessment can still make a meaningful difference.

How physiotherapy can help

Many women are told that leaking, pelvic heaviness, or core weakness are simply part of life after having children. They are not. These are signs that your body needs support - and physiotherapy can provide it.

Pelvic health physiotherapy after birth works by identifying exactly what has changed in your body and giving you a structured, evidence-based plan to address it. Rather than generic postnatal exercises, you get a programme built around your specific findings, your goals, and your lifestyle.

Catching and addressing issues early - or at any stage postpartum - reduces the risk of symptoms becoming long-term. With the right guidance, most women see significant improvement in their symptoms and confidence returning to physical activity.
